| Bio: | I am Starcaptain Hraith Odùa gü Schaig of the North Continental Union military forces. I am 41 years of age, born 56 years ago in Jagkhsék, Janhva. My current residence is in the city of Kuthy, although I wouldn't quite call that 'home'. Home is the gunship Vigilance. The 7-man crew is my family, the galaxy is my hunting grounds, and the ground beneath my feet is a bundle of rail guns, torpedo shafts, mini-warheads, and a massive FTL drive - old-style, not one of those new-fangled, super-efficient jobs they've got now. My vessel is a bucket of bolts riding on several tons of explosives, but I wouldn't trade it in for anything. Except, of course, an upgrade. However, the NCU isn't offering anytime soon. I have a two-headed hew named Maggan. Maggan is legally a single entity. However, in reality they're conjoined twins. Mag is the dominant one and Gan is the cuddly one. They are an official member of the crew. It's good to have a watch-hew on board; they sense problems the rest of us might miss, especially compression imbalances and odorless gases. If my habit of calling Maggan both "he" and "they" in turns becomes confusing, don't feel bad. It confuses me too. Crewman Ucht-Alau came up with the moniker "Knifeclaw Company" if I recall correctly. It refers to the claw on the index finger; if you're going to use one of your claws as a knife, that's generally the one you use. It can also be a reference to a point, or leadership, position. My rank puts the Vigilance at command of the assembled gunship squadron. Gunship squadrons aren't permanent entities; we're shuffled around as needed, depending on the type of vessel to be escorted and its destination. Allow me to offer a roll of my crew: First Officer Nulu Tchaoshou - my right-hand man, unfailingly loyal and a lot brighter than he looks. He deserves much more than the military has given him, but those are the breaks all Dshag suffer. I tease him about his ethnic quirks, but hold the utmost respect for him as a man and as a soldier. Chief Petty Officer Ciesìl Vou Maihi - chief engineer, Maihi's mate, and a welcome female presence on the Vigilance. We sometimes call her by her given name, 'Voù' - somewhat sexist of us, but that's life. She's sharp in more ways than one; the kind of person you want to be friends with for your own safety. But she has her softer traits as well. Petty Officer 3rd Class Maihi Ganthaan Ciesìl - our gunnery officer, Ciesìl's mate, and an intellectual and all-around nice guy. Probably not the personality type you'd expect from the crew member who does most of the killing (forgive my bluntness), but he's good at his job. Petty Officer Second Class Ucht-Alau Hze - quartermaster and man of all trades, he's the go-to guy for odd items and information. He could run this ship by himself if given the opportunity. Or so he would like us to believe. Apprentice Specialist Kruùgh Shan - our newest recruit, an aspiring navigator. Sharp kid. He'll go far if he sticks to it. For now he's little more than an apprentice. Petty Officers Jodhrakt and Fsau are taking liberty, as is their right. The rest of us volunteered for the mission we're currently serving. It's confidential and highly irregular; however, I speak freely within the journal about our experiences for record-keeping purposes. I suppose I should make some notation for each of the alien species we have to deal with. They are as follows: The Griys: pale, puny, bug-eyed, and hopelessly frail, they still somehow consider themselves masters of the galaxy. Or they used to. By now we've pummeled their pathetic asses in nearly every area that matters. We took their space technology, their math and science, and added our own ambitions to create a formidable empire. We've claimed all the best mining sources on planets and asteroids alike and we've assembled an armada that makes the Griys tremble in fear. They tried to stomp on us 'savages' and they missed! Hah! Reptilians are, by and large, unable to compete in any aggressive manner in the galactic community. They've instead become the merchants and satellite station lords, providing services and entertainment to us hard-working species. That's an overgeneralization; there are several types of Reptilians and they're all very different. Ask Ucht-Alau for more information. I'm no expert on the nasty beasts. Insectoids... oh, don't get me started. A viler, more loathesome set of creatures has never dragged itself out of a primordial puddle and called itself 'sentient'. I'm not even sure they are sentient. The Reptilians call them allies, but Reptilians will prostrate themselves to anyone for money. There's a reason why bugs are usually small enough to squish under your foot. Wingworms are more bizarre than Insectoids, but in a more tolerable fashion. I hope. We shall soon find out. They're our allies, and they at least communicate with vocal cords, which is more than one can say for Insectoids. They're an extremely backwards culture, and don't care one claw about the galactic community, but we have a meaty deal with them: we protect their little mudhole of a home planet from all other interested parties, and they give us exclusive mining rights to all other planets in the system. There's nothing to mine on 213/3 anyhow, but 213/5 has a fortune in uranium and copper. I'd say that makes Wingworms tolerable. Oh, that's right, we've been ordered to stop calling them 'Wingworms'. Of all the pansy-ass, smog-brained demands... so what DO we call them?!? Last, we have the mysterious newcomers. I hope they're not repulsive.
